If you are someone with some type of connection with a UK, you might be wondering whether you could have a claim to British nationality. Such a connection might be through a British parent, or grandparent, or being born in the UK etc.
If you are someone who has lived in the UK for at least 5 consecutive years and has indefinite leave to remain in the UK, you might qualify for naturalisation as British. You can read more on this and services we provide here.
There are certain situations, where your connection to the UK might indeed mean that you are entitled to Registering as British. This is different to naturalisation, as there is no need to prove residency in the UK, pass any tests etc. In most cases, registration as British is possible in situations where the person would have been born British, had there not been some sort of historic injustice that kept them from being British. For instance this was the case for those born to British mothers before women were able to transmit their nationality to their children.

There are a number of scenarios where an adult might be eligible to become British by registration, rather than nationalisation. However, before considering Registration, it is always wise to assess the person’s circumstances to see whether they might be automatically British. You can rest assured that our specialist British Nationality lawyers will assess that as a first step when you approach us.
Born outside of the UK to a British mother
One of the most common scenarios for those eligible to register as British, is where a person who was born before 1st January 1983, was born to a British mother. At that time women could not transfer their nationality to their children and as such, at the time of the birth, the child would have not acquired British Nationality.
If you fall under these circumstances, you might be able to Register as British, irrespective of your age.
Born to British father who was not married to your mother
If you were born before 1st July 2006 to a British father, without your parent’s being married, you would have not taken British nationality at birth, as before that date being married was a requirement for the fathers to be able to transmit their nationality to the children.
This historic injustice has now been corrected and you can apply to Register as British.
Lived in the UK until the age of 10
If you are not otherwise entitled to British citizenship, but you have lived in the UK for 10 years while a minor, you will be entitled to register as British, if you meet certain requirements in respect of absences and are of good character.
There are other ways in which one might be able to register as British and if you have a connection to the UK, it is always worth speaking to one of our immigration lawyers to get a professional assessment of your chances to become British.
